Freshwater Mussel Surveying & Collection & Relocation

When construction or in-water-works are required within freshwater systems, a proper mussel survey is required when there are potential impacts on the surrounding habitat where work will be taking place. In these areas, there is potential for the presence of the Yellow Lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa), listed as Special Concern under Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act in the Saint John River and its tributaries. These mussels are typically found in large and medium rivers. Pre-construction site visits identified suitable habitat as well as the presence of mussels and establish the need for mussel surveys/collection/relocation.

The Watersheds and Aquatics Research and Monitoring (WARM) Lab has carried out mussel surveys, collections, and relocations at the request of New Brunswick Transportation and Infrastructure for the past 4 years.
